How to do it

  1. Think up a short story of your own and write it down on the page called ‘My Story’. There shouldn’t be too many characters in it!
  2. Divide the story into individual pictures and briefly describe them on the page called ‘Story Overview’.
  3. Draw the characters from your story on the page called ‘My Comic Characters.’ They could be people, animals, or things. The pages called ‘Stick People 1’ and ‘Stick People 2’ will show you how to draw people.
  4. From the 12 ‘Layout Templates’ choose the format that you want to use for your comic strip.
  5. Now it’s time to start drawing your comic! Think about what perspective and framing you want to use. On the page called ‘Perspectives’ you’ll find a few examples. Then sketch out your picture first faintly with a pencil.
  6. Don’t forget to leave space for your speech bubbles! You’ll find a big selection on the ‘Speech Bubbles’ page.
  7. In order to make your comic lively your characters should be moving. You’ll find the most important ways to illustrate movement on the ‘Showing Movement’ page.
  8. Different facial expressions also liven up your comic characters. ‘Expressions Overview’, ‘Expressions Worksheet 1,’ and ‘Expressions Worksheet 2’ will help you find the right facial expressions.
  9. When you’re happy with your initial sketch, you can go over the pencil lines with a black pen or felt-tip. Lastly, you color it in. You can erase the pencil lines later on.
  10. A comic without sound illustrations is no comic! On the page called ‘Sound Illustrations’ you’ll find a big selection that you can use for your story.
