About Working with Depth Effects
Colors do not actually exist in nature. They only occur in our brains as color impressions. In this way, we humans can distinguish between roughly 5,000 different colors. In doing so, we perceive three properties for each color – the actual hue, the color saturation, and the luminosity (brightness). The brightness dictates how light or dark an object appears. The starkest difference is between black and white. By mixing in white paint we can lighten colors and by adding black paint we make them darker. By gradually lightening a color with white when painting you can achieve fascinating impressions of depth. Such depth effects make images exciting and realistic. If you can master this technique, you’ll be able to create impressive paintings!
Depth effects are especially impressive if you work with black silhouettes at the same time. These are stuck onto a background that’s been painted with gradations of light and dark. The black cutouts of ocean creatures don’t only create the illusion of three-dimensionality, they also give the viewer the impression that they’re looking at the silhouettes of ocean creatures swimming above from the depths of the ocean floor.
