About The Implied Hand

2D is the abbreviation for ‘two-dimensional’. Most 2D geometrical forms are flat surfaces. When a flat surface is given the third dimension - that is, depth - it becomes a 3D object. Then circles become spheres, squares become cubes, and triangles become pyramids. Such 3D objects can either be real objects or what we call ‘implied’. A hand, for example, is real because it really exists in three-dimensional space. If this hand is drawn on a sheet of paper, however, we say that the form is implied, since it’s only an illusion of three-dimensionality. To draw such three-dimensional forms on two-dimensional sheets of paper, artists have to use sophisticated light and shadow effects.
