Why is the Sunflower series considered a masterpiece?

Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers is renowned for its intense colors, visible brushstrokes, and vivid portrayal. Van Gogh's Sunflowers series captivates with its radiant yellows and oranges, even though the original colors have shifted with time. Sunflowers is one of his most famous paintings. He painted it in 1888, when he lived in the town of Arles in the south of France. He wanted to impress his friend Paul Gauguin, who was coming to visit. Van Gogh was fascinated by sunflowers and painted a total of seven versions. The painting showcases Van Gogh‘s typical painting style with strong colors and visible brushstrokes, which give the picture an intense and lively appearance. He himself wrote about it: “I work every morning at sunrise because the flowers wither quickly and the whole thing must be painted in one go“. None of the seven paintings were sold during his lifetime. He had little success as an artist throughout his life and sold only a few paintings. He had difficulty finding buyers for his works, as his modern style was not in demand at the time. It was only after his death that his works were discovered and appreciated by the art world. The bright colors of his sunflower paintings have become somewhat dull and brownish with time. Therefore, you do not have to stick to the original colors when making your own version, but instead color or paint the picture like van Gogh in strong yellow and orange tones.
