How can I use this resource?

With this resource, you can discover the life and work of Wassily Kandinsky, the Russian artist and pioneer of pure abstract painting. You can also color 18 templates of different parts of his painting and glue them together to make a large group work poster. This is a fun way to practice teamwork and artistic skills. What does this resource contain?

This resource contains 18 templates for making a giant poster of Color Study. Each template has a part of the painting that you can color according to the original or your own imagination. The templates are based on the painting that is in the Lenbachhaus museum in Munich. The resource contains four different sizes:

• Postcards (5.8 x 4.1 in / 14.8 x 10.5 cm)

• Miniature (4.3 x 3.2 in / 11 x 8 cm)

What makes Color Study so interesting? 

Kandinsky was very much influenced musically and culturally by his parents. He is said to have been a synesthete, since he had exceptional pictorial intelligence and a keen sense of color and form. He felt the effect of colors so intensely that he even heard sounds when he saw them, and he believed that colors can express feelings similar to music. His paintings were created according to the basic idea of hearing colors or seeing sounds. For Kandinsky, color harmony and the effect of colors on the soul were of elemental importance: “Color is a power that acts directly on the soul... Color is the keyboard, the artist is the hand that plays upon it...“

Color Study is one of his most famous paintings from his abstract period. He painted it in 1913, using watercolor, gouache, and black chalk on paper. It shows squares with concentric circles in different colors, arranged in a grid-like pattern. The painting has a vibrant and harmonious effect, as Kandinsky carefully balanced the colors and shapes. He used warm colors (red, orange, yellow) and cool colors (blue, green, purple) to create contrast and rhythm. Color Study shows Kandinsky's innovative and expressive use of color and form.
