Op art stands for ‘optical art’ and deals with the phenomena of perception. The focus is often on abstract patterns and geometric, colored shapes that create surprising or unusual optical effects.
Weaving is one of the oldest of humankind’s textile-making techniques. Woven fabrics consist of two directions of thread - the warp threads (here warp mats) and the weft threads (here weft strips). The pre-tensioned warp threads form the basis, over and under which the weft threads are successively threaded from one edge to the other. This is how textiles such as cloth, carpets, and wall hangings are created.
However, the oldest weavings we know of were made from papery reeds or flat tree bark fibers - a weaving technique that’s easy to grasp since paper is flat and also lends itself very well to weaving.

Print out one warp mat and one of the weft-strip sheets in two different colors.
Fold the warp mat in half along the dotted line and then cut along the solid lines. Cut out the weft strips following the solid lines.
Turn the warp mat over so that the printed side is on the reverse and weave the weft strips over and under the warp strips on the mat.
Glue the ends of the weft strips to the edges of the warp mat. There you have it - real op art!
